2001 River Rangers Program

This summer we instituted a new volunteer river ranger project. Money from Colorado Scenic Byways, Patagonia, and the Ganett Foundation enabled us to put 6 volunteers in the canyon this summer. We trained the volunteers at a two-day workshop in early summer. The Arapaho/Roosevelt National Forest hired a coordinator, using money from the contributing groups, to give the effort professional support. The Rangers have no legal authority, but are able to give folks pointers on the proper use of the resource and to observe conflicts between various user groups. They are trained in the human and natural history of the area and know where public facilities are located. We hope that this effort will grow over the years and that it will help reduce the impacts we have on the resource.
